Ulster Cup Secured for Donaghadee On Sunday 24th September, the Donaghadee Ulster Cup Team travelled to Castle Hume Golf Club for the return leg of the final. Fully focused both Bernard and Jimmy returned to their caddy roles. Even with a 6 ½ – ½ lead from their first home leg after a magnificent team performance; the challenge from this strong castle Hume team was not underestimated and respect to their home record against opponents was emphasised in the pre-match talk. The challenging course conditions were considered by the GUI officials and lift clean and place on fairways and plugged balls in rough rules were invoked. Finding fairways was essential. With all matches, out on the course after the first six holes played, Donaghadee were only ahead in one match and down in four. Could the unthinkable be about to happen? It was then the team went into overdrive and their quality and patient approach, gradually turned from a losing to a winning position. Castle Hume won the first match finished but when Brett registered a superb 5 & 4 victory, the winning point was secured and the five remaining pairings were called in by the Dee Boys well placed in the remaining unfinished games.
The joy on the faces of the winning side when they gathered together as a group on the course is captured on the club website/Facebook and twitter pages by our photographer of the year and ardent supporter Alex McWilliams and says all of this side.
This team and its Captain and back room staff progressed through the early rounds against Galgorm and Royal Belfast with a few teething problems. Its match a titanic struggle with Carrickfergus who were looked upon as the potential overall winners, proved a turning point. After this win a confidence and belief was engendered within the team.
This band of brothers and sister Fiona then turned on the style for the remaining matches to bring the 2017 ULSTER CUP back to Donaghadee for the first time, in its 118 year history.
